BIG BOYS
This year, we planted the "big boy organic tomato" plant. Although it has to be grown on direct sun, we grew her indoor. However, we kept her out for few hours every day. She gave rise to several young flower buds. I was so excited but the excitement did not last for long. The flower buds turned into immature flowers. Finally, she got two matured flowers. I was excited again! Soon, the flowers gave rise to pea-sized green fruits. They rapidly grew bigger but did not ripe for a while. It is so sad that, at this stage, we left her alone and went to India. My thoughts were upon her. It looks she had accumulated enough ethylene while we were in our vacation. Yes! we came back and found her with her two bright big boys!

we too got a few discarded tomato plantlings from the plant breeding lab in department of plant sciences. We left it at our door entrance and kept an eye on its dull yellow flowers almost every day. When we had almost lost hope thinking that it might be some sterile breeding experiment, one tiny bright green tomato came through. It brought in such a thrill that I loved coming back home just to have a glimpse of the slowly expanding tomato. It remained green and the size of a small lime for a long time. On a frosty night, it turned into orange shiny fruit which darkened into deep red in a week!! After taking a lot of pictures of our first grown fruit, with a very sad heart we had to cut it for our favourite rasam.- Viji
